The best take from this early look at the 2015 NFL standings is that the Minnesota Vikings would be part of the fun if the playoffs started now. Here are the twelve teams that would be part of that playoff fun.
AFC
New England Patriots
Cincinnati Bengals
Denver Broncos
Indianapolis Colts
New York Jets
Buffalo Bills/Pittsburgh Steelers
NFC
Atlanta Falcons
Green Bay Packers
New York Giants
Arizona Cardinals
Carolina Panthers
Minnesota Vikings
It's a little surprising to see six undefeated teams through five weeks. It's probably not much of a surprise that the Patriots, Broncos, and Packers are three of them but the other three are. The 1972 Miami Dolphins probably don't get too nervous about undefeated teams until weeks 9 or 10 but it must be a little unsettling for them to see six such teams at this point in the season.
The biggest surprise for me is seeing the Jets with a single loss. They are a touchdown against the very up-and-down Eagles team from being undefeated. The Jets looked like a mess after losing expected starting quarterback Geno Smith, and the manner in which they lost him, before the season. The drama surrounding defensive linemen Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson didn't help. If I had a vote for coach of the year at this early point of the season it would go to Todd Bowles.
