Panthers-Vikings

It's never easy with this Minnesota Vikings team. The Vikings sweated out a final seconds, 54-yard field goal attempt to survive with a 28-27 win.

This was the Panthers game to win and the Vikings took it from them.

The Vikings hosted Carolina yesterday and for much of the game they catered to every need of the Panthers. During a ten second span at the start of the third quarter, the Vikings fumbled twice under the shadow of their own goal posts. Each fumble was returned for a touchdown by rookie safety, linebacker, rover, whatever Jeremy Chinn. Not only did the Vikings offense hand the Panthers defense 14 points in a blink of time, they may have handed the Defensive Rookie of the Year award to Chinn. Not only were 14 breezy points handed to the Panthers, the Vikings damn-near handed them the game when Chad Beebe dropped a fair catch of a punt inside the 20-yard line. The Panthers recovered at the nine-yard line with just over two minutes to play. It looked bleak. It looked like the Vikings were about to drop another winnable game and fall to 4-7. Playoff dreams gone poof. The way things have gone this season, especially at home, this game was over. The Vikings did all of the things in this game that they've done in most of their six losses. Too many mistakes. Too many blown chances. This game would be different. From the nine-yard line, with the game nearly in hand, the Panthers settled for a field goal. As significant, the Panthers took only 19 seconds off the clock. Down 27-21 with 1:51 to play, the Vikings had a chance. Kirk Cousins took over.

There are so damn many narratives out there that Kirk Cousins can't do this and can't do that. One of those narratives is that he can't play high level quarterback when the threat of the run is taken from him. Another narrative is that he can't lead his team on a game-winning drive with little time to play. This game was one of those games and one of those situations. Seven points to win and 1:51 to win it. Here's what he did.

15 yards to Justin Jefferson
6 yards to Chad Beebe
7 yards to Kyle Rudolph
12 yards to Chad Beebe
25 yards to Kyle Rudolph
Incomplete
10 yards to Chad Beebe-Touchdown

It was almost too easy. Cousins faced two second downs and no third downs. He steamed the team down the field without a hint of a running game. Or even a back in the backfield. It can be argued that the Vikings scored too fast. There was still 46 seconds on the clock. It was enough time for Teddy Bridgewater to get the Panthers in position for a legitimate chance at a game-winning field goal. 54 yards is well within the reach of Joey Slye's leg. Fortunately, the kick never had a chance.

It's never easy with this Minnesota Vikings team.

The game wouldn't have been this close if miscues hadn't handed the Panthers easy access to 17 points. 14 of those points came only ten seconds apart. It felt like a flashback to the Seahawks game. If anything came out of that game and this game it's that this Vikings team is resilient. Or can be resilient. It's tough for any team to overcome giving an opponent easy scores. The Vikings came back on the Seahawks but let it slip away at the end. They came back on the Panthers and didn't let it slip away.

The Vikings offense entered the game without receiver Adam Thielen and tight end Irv Smith Jr. That's a significant hit to the passing attack and Smith's blocking is a significant part of the running game. So, Cousins responded by spreading the ball to more of his receivers. Four had seven catches for more than 60 yards.

Pass Catcher    Receptions  Yards TDs
Olabisi Johnson   7             74
Justin Jefferson   7             70   2
Kyle Rudolph           7             68
Chad Beebe           7             63    1

In just over a minute of game time, Beebe went from goat to hero. It probably felt more like an hour to him.

The Vikings defense continues to be a scrappy group. Eric Kendricks stopped a scoring opportunity with a red zone interception. It's the third time he's done that this season. He's the best middle linebacker in the league. The defense wasn't on the field for 14 of the Panthers 27 points and they weren't responsible for the final three points. They allowed a single, sustained touchdown drive. The Vikings defense is a scrappy group that gives some in the middle of the field but is quite stingy near the end zone. It's an improving group but they have to get better in a hurry. Every game is a playoff game through the end of their season.

It's never easy with this Minnesota Vikings team.

The Vikings host the Jacksonville Jaguars next week. It's a must-win game. As are the following four games.

Finally, Jonathan Vilma is horrible in the broadcast booth. He was on the call for the Vikings-Cowboys game last week. When I saw that he also had the Panthers game, I feared that he, Kenny Albert and Shannon Spake were in a Minneapolis bubble during the Vikings' three-game home stand. Fortunately, the Jaguars game is a CBS game. Vilma seems to talk for the sake of talking and what he says doesn't add much. Sometimes less is more. With Vilma, much less would be much better.

Flea Flicker Week 12 Predictions

Wow. We're already on the other side of Thanksgiving and steaming towards Christmas. Until then we have a Sunday and Monday night of NFL games.

Carolina Panthers @ Minnesota Vikings
Pick: Vikings
The Vikings couldn't lose many more games before they gave one to the Cowboys last week. The Vikings have to win this game. They have to win every remaining game if the playoffs are still a dream.

Las Vegas Raiders @ Atlanta Falcons
Pick: Raiders
The Raiders look better with each game that they play. That's movement in the right direction. The Falcons aren't doing that.

Los Angeles Chargers @ Buffalo Bills
Pick: Bills
3-7 vs. 7-3. On paper, this looks like an uneven game. It isn't. The Chargers can throw a scare into any team. I still think that the Bills win.

New York Giants @ Cincinnati Bengals
Pick: Giants
This would've been a fun game if Joe Burrow was playing in it. I'm not sure what to think about it now.

Tennessee Titans @ Indianapolis Colts
Pick: Colts
I hate when division foes have their two games separated by a single game. The Colts beat the Titans in Week 10 by a 34-17 score. I think that this one is much closer.

Arizona Cardinals @ New England Patriots
Pick: Patriots
I'm picking the Patriots simply because a Cardinals loss helps the Vikings.

Miami Dolphins @ New York Jets
Pick: Dolphins
I'm not sure how the Jets avoid an 0-16 season. They might have the most difficult remaining schedule in the league.

Cleveland Browns @ Jacksonville Jaguars
Pick: Browns
As with the Dolphins-Jets game, this one is a pick against the Jaguars as much as a pick for the Browns.

New Orleans Saints @ Denver Broncos
Pick: Saints
The Saints win another game in spite of the "quarterback" that's leading them. Speaking of quarterbacks, the Broncos have none. Should be fun.

San Francisco 49ers @ Los Angeles Rams
Pick: Rams
This was scheduled to be a huge game. Then injuries and COVID dismantled the 49ers' roster. They are getting several players back this week but this feels all Rams.

Kansas City Chiefs @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Pick: Chiefs
This game could be a blast. It's damn near guaranteed that the Chiefs will do their part to make it a blast. The Buccaneers are way too inconsistent to know what they'll be any given week.

Chicago Bears @ Green Bay Packers
Pick: Packers
It's hard to believe that this Bears team was once 5-1.

Seattle Seahawks @ Philadelphia Eagles
Pick: Seahawks
The Seahawks should cruise.

Baltimore Ravens @ Pittsburgh Steelers
Pick: Steelers
The Ravens haven't looked right. Until they get out of that funk it's tough to pick them. Especially against the Steelers. Especially with half the team sidelined with COVID.

This game was supposed to be played on Thanksgiving. Then it was supposed to be on Sunday. COVID issues with the Ravens bumped it to today. The Steelers aren't happy about it due to this being the second time this season that an opponent's COVID issues jumbled their schedule. The world isn't out to get the Steelers. Neither is the league. Nor is COVID. All 32 teams are walking a tightrope during this terrible time. The whole world is. We're real lucky to be getting any football at all.

NFLPA Officers

I'm guessing that the players for each of the 32 NFL teams have recently selected their union representatives. I'm guessing that because I've seen the NFLPA using social media to post each team's representatives. Since nearly everything about football interests me, many of the particulars of the NFLPA interest me. I was curious to see which players represent each team. Instead of waiting for the union to post all 32 teams I went to the NFLPA website.

Seattle Seahwaks Co-Alternate 2 Luke Willson was released after his selection. He's now with the Baltimore Ravens. Where that leaves him as a Co-Alternate 2 is unknown. Maybe he can take the currently vacant Co-Alternate 2 role of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Speaking of that empty Jaguars spot, how does a team have a Co-Alternate 3 and no Co-Alternate 2?

I'm not sure how much good the NFLPA can do with the involvement of so damn many Stanford players.

Brennan Scarlett brings some reason to that chaos as he spent the majority of his college days at Cal.

123 Big Games

Cal hosts Stanford today in the 123rd Big Game. The two academic juggernauts first met for a football affair in 1892. Entering the 2020 season, it's the twelfth most played college football rivalry game in the country.

1.   Lehigh-Lafayette  155 games
2.   Yale-Princeton  142
3.   Yale-Harvard  136
4.   William & Mary-Richmond  130
5.   Minnesota-Wisconsin  129
6.   Penn-Cornell  126
7.   North Carolina-Virginia  125
      Georgia-Auburn  125
9.   Miami (OH)-Cincinnati  124
      Missouri-Kansas  124
11. Oregon-Oregon State  124
12. Cal-Stanford  123
      Purdue-Indiana  123

It might be the 12th most played rivalry game but it's clearly the best, most exciting rivalry.

Despite having played one fewer game than the Oregon-Oregon State rivalry the Big Game is the oldest rivalry in the West. The Ducks and Beavers played for the first time in 1894.

Stanford (unfortunately) leads the all-time series: 64-47-11(including rugby games)
At Berkeley: Stanford leads 28-21-6
At Stanford: Stanford leads 31-22-1
At San Francisco: Stanford leads 5-4-4
Longest win streak: Stanford 9, 2010-18-very ugly years
Longest Cal unbeaten streak: 8, 1947-54-beautiful years
Current streak: Cal, 1 2019

The term "Big Game" was first used in 1900 for the Thanksgiving Day clash.

The two teams play for the Stanford Axe. The Axe made it's first appearance at a Stanford pep rally on April 13, 1899. The Axe made it's second appearance two days later at a Cal-Stanford baseball game in San Francisco. Stanford yell leaders displayed and paraded the Axe with a pathetic cheer. Cal students didn't much care for any of it and stole the Axe. The flight from San Francisco to Berkeley was a thrill. Cal kept the Axe safe and in Berkeley for 31 years. Stanford deviants stole it in 1930 and kept it in a bank vault for three years. It was in 1933 that both universities agreed that the Stanford Axe would be the annual trophy for the Big Game. That agreement hasn't kept Cal or Stanford students from stealing or attempting to steal the Axe. Cal students have stolen it three times. Stanford students have stolen it four times. Oh, to be a college student again.

In 1906 many colleges dropped football due to concerns over the violence in football. Cal and Stanford were two of those colleges. In place of football the Big Game was contested in rugby from 1906-14. Cal may pummel Stanford routinely in rugby these days but that wasn't the case during those years. Stanford had a 5-3-1 edge in the games played from 1906-14. Cal returned to football in 1915 but Stanford was having too much fun with rugby. They didn't return to football until 1919. With the exception of the War years of 1943-45 the Big Game has been played every year since 1919.

Here are the results of the 122 football, and rugby, games played to date.

Go Bears! Beat Stanford!
