The 17-Game Season Is Here

It’s been 43 years since the NFL increased the number of games in the regular season. In 1978, the league boosted the regular season from 14 games to 16 games. It’s held steady at 16 until now. The 17-game NFL season is here. 18 is sure to follow.

It actually isn’t a done deal. It will be a done deal when the owners vote at the league meetings later this month. They’ve wanted to increase the number of regular season games for years. The players have resisted. They gave away that resistance last year in the new CBA. It only took a year for the owners to pounce. They probably would’ve pounced a year ago if there wasn’t so much uncertainty about the season. The only question when the owners vote is probably whether the preseason is two games or three.

The 17-game NFL regular season is here.

As long as the league jams more games into each week, shortens the time between games, and jams more games into the regular season they can’t claim that they care about the safety of the players. From the first league game in 1920, the owners considered the players a replaceable commodity. That hasn’t changed. The players are now just well-paid, disposable commodities. I’m not a fan of the game increase but I’ve long accepted that it was inevitable. More football doesn’t mean better football. It’s all about money and that enormous pile of it can ever be enormous enough for the 32 wealthy owners.

Anyway, the Minnesota Vikings 2021 season will have an extra game. According to Peter King, the NFC North will be matched against the AFC West. The Vikings extra game will be a trip to Los Angeles and a date with the Chargers in gigantic SoFi Stadium. The last time the Vikings played the Chargers in Los Angeles it was in an itty bitty soccer stadium. This will be different.

Here’s the Vikings whole slate, minus the dates.
