Minnesota Vikings Lose Draft Pick

The Minnesota Vikings were all set to enter the 2021 NFL Draft with a robust 12 picks. Due to some unacceptable actions taken by the team in 2019 they will now enter the 2021 NFL Draft with a still robust 11 picks. The NFL penalized the Vikings their seventh-round pick (242nd overall) for a salary cap violation related to a practice squad player during the 2019 season. In addition to the lost pick, three Vikings executives were fined $10,000 apiece. The NFL didn’t elaborate on the infraction so the reason for penalizing the Vikings now for something that happened in 2019 wasn’t explained. My guess is that some team bitched about the Vikings having so damn many picks and the league dug up something minor. A $10,000 fine is so tiny by NFL standards. The last time a fine so tiny was levied it was probably done so by Pete Rozelle.

In a very brief statement released by the team, Vikings general manager said: “A mistake was made, we take responsibility and we respect the league’s decision and will move forward.”

With as much as Spielman loves his draft picks, all his draft picks, moving forward may not be so easy for him.

Without that seventh-round pick, the Vikings now have the following 11 draft picks.

1 (14)
3 (78)
3 (90) (from Ravens)
4 (119)
4 (125) (from Bears)
4 (134) (from Bills)
4 (143) (comp pick)
5 (157)
5 (168) (from Steelers)
6 (199)
6 (223) (comp pick)

Come draft time, I believe that the Vikings will be making a selection in the seventh round. Hopefully, they’ll be making a selection in the second round as well. If not, the wait from pick 14 to pick 78 will be excruciating.
