Minnesota’s Day One
The Minnesota Vikings were on the sideline for all of Day One’s early activity. They may/may not have been part of bidding wars for a variety of edge rushers. There were rumors that they were monitoring the numbers with John Thuney. All of that was behind the scenes stuff. Interest in players doesn’t mean much when they agree to deals with other teams. The Vikings closed the day with a couple of contract agreements.
Dalvin Tomlinson, DT: 2yrs/22M
Nick Vigil, LB: 1yr/?
The Vikings defense wasn’t good in 2020. Most teams often gained easy yards on the ground. Some teams ran at will. Pairing Dalvin Tomlinson with Michael Pierce in the middle of the defensive line should put an end to that. The pair should should find their way into the backfield and will eat up blocks. Linebackers Anthony Barr, Eric Kendricks and perhaps Nick Vigil will be free to make plays. Some may see the signing as putting a pair of run-stuffing nose tackles in the middle and forsaking anything resembling an interior pass rush. I think that Pierce and Tomlinson have more juice than just being a pair of run-stuffing nose tackles. I’m looking forward to seeing the pair on the field. I’m looking forward to opposing running backs no longer running against air. There’s a feel of something similar to the “Williams Wall” about Pierce and Tomlinson.
The Vikings also re-signed offensive tackle Rashod Hill. It wasn’t the signing whirlwind of the Patriots but it was a nice Day One for the Vikings.
Players Signing To Stay Where They Were:
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Shaq Barrett, Edge: 4yrs/68M
Rob Gronkowski, TE: 1yr/8M
Following the re-signing of Lavonte David and franchise-tagging of Chris Godwin, the Buccaneers are doing their best to keep the team together.
Los Angeles Rams
Leonard Floyd, Edge: 4yrs/64M
Detroit Lions
Romeo Okwara, Edge: 3yrs/39M
Denver Broncos
Shelby Harris, DT: 3yrs/27M
New Orleans Saints
Jameis Winston, QB: 1yr/5.5M+
