Today is scheduled to be the deadline for NFL teams to apply franchise/transition tags on one of their impending free agents. The deadline could be nudged a bit as a salary cap for the 2021 season has yet to be set. Without a cap there are no prices on the various franchise and transition tags. That doesn’t stop people from making estimates. Here are the franchise and transition tag estimates per Over the Cap.
Franchise Tag
Quarterback: $24,112,000
Defensive End: $17,752,000
Receiver: $16,420,000
Linebacker: $15,657,000
Cornerback: $15,266,000
Offensive Line: $14,507,000
Defensive Tackle: $14,178,000
Safety: $11,196,000
Running Back: $11,112,000
Tight End: $10,167,00
Special Teams: $4792,000
Transition Tag
Quarterback: $21,749,000
Defensive End: $14,811,000
Receiver: $14,269,000
Linebacker: $13,406,000
Cornerback: $13,202,000
Offensive Line: $13,156,000
Defensive Tackle: $11,405,000
Safety: $9,550,000
Running Back: $8,942,000
Tight End: $8,576,00
Special Teams: $4,382,000
I’ve always had issues with the NFL’s mechanism for determining these numbers. The linebacker numbers are inflated by 3-4 outside linebackers that play more like defensive ends. All players that spend most of their snaps charging after quarterbacks should be grouped as edge rushers. Offensive line has always been a mess. Why group tackles, guards, and centers together? It isn’t done with the defensive line.
I always wonder what game-changers like Travis Kelce, George Kittle, Darren Waller, etc. think when they see that tight ends rate only over special teams players.
So far, the following players have been slapped with the franchise tag:
Denver Broncos: Justin Simmons, S
Washington Football Team: Brandon Scherff, OG
New York Jets: Marcus Maye, S
There have been reports that the following players will be slapped with the franchise tag before the deadline (whenever that may be):
Carolina Panthers: Taylor Moton, OT
New York Giants: Leonard Williams, DT
If Leonard Williams does get the franchise tag, he’ll join Justin Simmons and Brandon Scherff as tagged players for consecutive seasons.
Many fans of the Minnesota Vikings are likely sad due to this round of franchise tags. Despite severe salary cap restraints, Scherff and Williams were high on free agent wish lists.
