All seven teams requested an interview with Eric Bieniemy. The Eagles reportedly never actually interviewed him.

Four of the seven coaches that were hired during this cycle had a single interview request.

Dan Campbell
David Culley
Urban Meyer
Nick Sirianni

It shouldn’t be a surprise that those four coaches weren’t flooded with interview requests. Dan Campbell, David Culley, and Nick Sirianni were surprise hires. At least, they surprised me. Urban Meyer was very selective in his choice of teams. He was only going to interview with the team of his choosing.

One of the biggest surprises of this coaching cycle was that Byron Leftwich wasn’t interviewed at all.

The seven new head coaches:

Arthur Smith
Dan Campbell
David Culley
Urban Meyer
Brandon Staley
Robert Saleh
Nick Sirianni

Of those hired, Arthur Smith and Robert Saleh were the only two that I figured were certain to be two of the seven new head coaches. I didn’t consider Urban Meyer a candidate because I didn’t think that he’d return to coaching. The profession had taken such a toll on his health. I figured that the remaining five openings would be filled by Eric Bieniemy, Brian Daboll, Todd Bowles, Marvin Lewis/Jim Caldwell, and perhaps a college coach (Matt Campbell?). I should’ve known that there’d be no change in the hiring of minority coaches. That’s probably the least surprising aspect of this year’s coaching hires. I shouldn’t be surprised by wealthy, white men being hesitant to hire people that don’t look like them.

How about this little nugget from the league’s demographics report:

Fewest interviews until first head-coaching job
1-Doug Pederson (white)
1-Kliff Kingsbury (white)
1-Joe Judge (white)
2-Ben McAdoo (white)
2-Matt LaFleur (white)
5-Anthony Lynn (minority)
5-Brian Flores (minority)
6-Steve Wilkes (minority)
7-Vance Joseph (minority)
12-Todd Bowles (minority)

Brian Flores had better continue his upward trajectory with the Miami Dolphins. If there’s anything more difficult than a minority coach getting a head coaching job it’s a minority coach getting a second head coaching job. They can’t all be Eric Mangini. Or Adam Gase.
