Franchise Tag Tallies

Despite not having an announced salary cap, the franchise tag deadline passed yesterday afternoon. Ten players were slapped with the franchise tag.

Denver Broncos: Justin Jefferson, S
New York Jets: Marcus Maye, S
Washington Football Team: Brandon Scherff, OG
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Chris Godwin, WR
Jacksonville Jaguars: Cam Robinson, OT
New York Giants: Leonard Williams, DT
Chicago Bears: Allen Robinson, WR
Carolina Panthers: Taylor Moton, OT
New Orleans Saints: Marcus Williams
Dallas Cowboys: Dak Prescott, QB

The most surprising tag is definitely Dak Prescott. It’s surprising because he signed a contract extension yesterday. It turns out that the tag is a procedural move between agent and team that prevents Prescott from ever being tagged again.

Another surprising tag recipient is Marcus Williams. It’s surprising because the Saints can’t afford it. They are so far in the red that any new contract commitment should be impossible. But it’s the Saints. They routinely spend what they don’t have as they kick the money can further down the road.

There were several players that were strong candidates to be tagged but didn’t get tagged. Unless team and player can agree to a new deal in the coming days, the following players will hit the open market on March 17.

Aaron Jones, RB, Green Bay Packers
Chris Carson, RB, Seattle Seahawks
Kenny Golladay, WR, Detroit Lions
Will Fuller, WR, Houston Texans
Hunter Henry, TE, Los Angeles Chargers
Jonnu Smith, TE, Tennessee Titans
Trent Williams, OT, San Francisco 49ers
Joe Thuney, OG, New England Patriots
Corey Linsley, C, Green Bay Packers
Shaq Barrett, Edge, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Matt Judon, Edge, Baltimore Ravens
Bud Dupree, Edge, Pittsburgh Steelers
Haason Reddick, LB, Arizona Cardinals
Carl Lawson, Edge, Cincinnati Bengals
John Johnson, S, Los Angeles Rams

If something doesn’t get done with their current teams over the next week, there’s going to be a lot of high-end talent on the open market.

Year-by-year number of franchise tags since the 2011 CBA:

2021: 10
2020: 13
2019: 7
2018: 5
2017: 7
2016: 7
2015: 5
2014: 4
2013: 8
2012: 21
2011: 13

10 franchise tags is a little on the high side compared to recent history.

With the franchise tagging done, the NFL moves another step closer to 2021 Free Agency.
