Canton, Ohio is considered the birthplace of professional football. The meeting that led to the formation of the American Professional Football Association/National Football League was held at a car dealership in the town. Some of the best football played in the early years of the 20th century was played in and around Stark County. Canton had a football rival in those days. Massillon was every bit as football-mad as their neighbor. The Canton Bulldogs-Massillon Tigers rivalry was as fierce as any in sports. Ever. Canton is far better known for their football passion due to the Pro Football Hall of Fame being there but Massillon's passion for the game has always been strong. A wall mural at the town's main downtown intersection carries the following composed by Iowa sportswriter Ron Maly in 1978.
In the beginning, when the Great Creator was drawing plans
for this world of ours, He decided there should be something for everyone. He
gave us mountains that reach to the sky, deep blue seas, green forests, dry
deserts, gorgeous flowers, and gigantic trees. He then decided there should be
football, and He gave us Massilon. He created only one Massilon. He knew that
would be enough.
Massillon loves their football.
