The much anticipated NFL Trade Deadline passed yesterday afternoon with barely a peep. It's a real mystery as to why anyone would expect a blockbuster, in-season trade in football but so many fans and talking heads do. Wrong sport. There was even a rumor bouncing around as the deadline approached that Tony Romo was on his way to Denver for one of their super defenders. Right.
There was only one trade yesterday.
Detroit gets:
CB Jonathan Banks
Tampa Bay gets:
2018 7th(conditional)
The Buccaneers had made it clear that they were going to cut Banks. The Lions decided that they didn't want to take a chance with the waiver game.
The biggest trade of the trading season went down on Monday. The New England Patriots sent sometimes terrific linebacker Jamie Collins to the Cleveland Browns for a 2017 third round compensatory pick. This trade caught a lot of people by surprise. Collins is a tremendous athlete and great football talent but the Patriots obviously didn't see him as part of their plans moving forward. They weren't going to re-sign him in the offseason and wanted the guaranteed compensation that they received through a trade. The Patriots can survive without Collins and he immediately becomes a cornerstone defensive player for the Browns. They just have to sign him in the offseason and they have plenty of cap space to do so.
The two trades this week were preceded by the following trades in recent weeks.
October 18
Green Bay gets:
RB Knile Davis
Kansas City gets:
2016 7th(conditional)
The Packers released Davis this week so one can say that this trade never happened at all. After the Packers released Davis the New York Jets snapped him up and released him in the span of about 150 minutes. Nice.
October 25
Denver gets:
TE A.J. Derby
New England gets:
2017 5th
October 25
New England gets:
Kyle Van Noy
2017 7th
Detroit gets:
2017 6th
And that brings to an end the NFL's in-season trading season.
