Minnesota Vikings Roster: The Tight Ends

The run through the Minnesota Vikings roster continues. Next up: The Tight Ends. 

The Minnesota Vikings tight end position is something of an unknown. Irv Smith Jr. has the talent to be a game breaker. He was supposed to break those games last season. That didn’t happen due to a preseason knee injury. Johnny Mundt was signed in the offseason. He’s also coming off a knee injury. The new offensive coaches know him well from their Los Angeles Rams days and that’s good enough for me. Smith and Mundt may be unknowns but I expect big things from both. I expect Smith to shine brightly. After the top two, it’s even greater unknowns for the Vikings tight ends.

Top Competition: 

Right now, I see the Vikings keeping three tight ends. There are just so many needs for an extra player at other positions (receiver, linebacker) It still wouldn’t be much of a surprise if the Vikings decision-makers keep four tight ends. The competition starts at TE3. If any player has an edge, that player might be Nick Muse. He and recent added Shaun Beyer are the only contenders that were chosen by the current decision-makers. 

Could Surprise:

I’m hoping one or more of Ben Ellefson, Zach Davidson, Nick Muse, and Shaun Beyer surprise. 

Excited To See:

Irv Smith Jr. I’ve been waiting for a year to see what he can do as TE1. He has the talent to be elite.
