The Minnesota Vikings will be sporting a base 3-4 defense this year. The defensive ends of the past are now outside linebackers. Standing up. Moving around. It’s going to be fun.
Minnesota Vikings Roster: The Edge
Danielle Hunter
Za’Darius Smith
D.J. Wonnum
Patrick Jones II
Janarius Robinson
Zach McCloud
Luiji Vilain
Adrian Mintze
There is no other aspect of the 2022 Minnesota Vikings that I’m more excited to see than Danielle Hunter and Za’Darius Smith terrorizing quarterbacks. Both come into the season with health questions as each missed nearly all of last season. Hunter has missed most of the last two seasons. If both can stay on the field, quarterbacks will be under siege all season. Hunter and Smith. It’s going to be beautiful. D.J. Wonnum is the most experienced of the players behind the starters. He’s had some bright moments over his two years in the league. He needs to play with more consistency. Patrick Jones II earned opportunities towards the end of his rookie season. Janarius Robinson is mostly an unknown as he missed all of his rookie season to an injury. Adrian Mintze played for defensive coordinator Ed Donatell in Denver last season. Zach McCloud and Luiji Vilain are undrafted free agents.
Top Competition:
It’s a wide open competition for all of the backup spots. Simply due to his experience, Wonnum has an edge for one of the spots. I could see any of the six players behind Hunter and Smith making the roster.
Could Surprise:
Janarius Robinson. This is nothing more than a hunch. Whether it’s because he missed all of last season, it just feels like he’s somewhat forgotten. He certainly looks like an NFL edge rusher. Now, he has to play like one.
I see the Vikings keeping five edge players.
