Senior Bowl Hall of Fame

The Senior Bowl announced that five new members will be inducted into the game’s Hall of Fame.

Cameron Jordan, California
Patrick Surtain, Southern Mississippi
Joe Staley, Central Michigan
Fred Taylor, Florida
Reggie Wayne, Miami

All were terrific college football players. All had terrific NFL careers. Cameron Jordan is still having a terrific NFL career.

The Senior Bowl has been honoring the all-star game’s great players since 1988. I knew that the East-West Shrine Bowl honored past players. I attended a Shrine Bowl game at Stanford during which Alan Page was honored. That was a real treat. It only follows that the Senior Bowl does the same. It seems a little strange to have a Hall of Fame of players and coaches for the accomplishments in a single game. I’m a fan of nearly any attempt to honor the past.

A quick count of the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame members has 44 of them going on to Pro Football Hall of Fame careers. Including the curious presence of Wellington Mara. He must’ve been a supportive or selection presence over the years.
