New Year's Day College Bowl Picks

Here's a stab at the "big" College Bowl Games today.

Since Cal took care of Air Force in their first bowl game in decades. Actually, it's only been four years since Cal's last bowl game and seven years since their last bowl win. It was great to see quarterback Jared Goff finish his, too short, Cal career on a very high note. Best of luck to him in the NFL and beyond. He's a good kid. Anyway, since Cal finally played in and won a bowl game the rest of these games are gravy. Just for the fun that is football. Here's hoping for some terrific games. today and everyday that they are scheduled.

The games.

Outback Bowl
#13 Northwestern vs #23 Tennessee
Pick: Northwestern
I've seen Northwestern look great this year. I've seen them look no so great. I'm guessing that they are more like the former today. I haven't seen enough of Tennessee this year to know what to expect them.

Fiesta Bowl
#8 Notre Dame vs #7 Ohio St.
Pick: Ohio St.
Ohio St. would probably have been in the playoffs if they didn't have so damn many good quarterbacks. Urban Meyer couldn't decide on one so they never had any consistency. This game could be a disaster for Notre Dame. Or, it could be great. I'm hoping for the latter.

Citrus Bowl
#14 Michigan vs #19 Florida
Pick: Michigan
College football just feels more like college football when Michigan is good. And Michigan has been very good at times this year. This feels like one of those times.

Rose Bowl
#6 Stanford vs #5 Iowa
Pick: Stanford
Iowa was impressive in their loss to Michigan St. in the Big 10 Championship. I just don't think that they have an answer for Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey. But, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz did have several weeks to prepare his team to contain McCaffrey. I still think that Stanford's do-everything back shines.

Sugar Bowl
#16 Oklahoma St. vs #12 Mississippi
Pick: Oklahoma St
Both of these teams are a mystery. Oklahoma St. looked like they wanted to be part of the playoff fun and then they lose their last two games. Their only two losses of the season. And they looked nothing like the team that had won their previous ten in losing those games. How does Mississippi beat Alabama and lose to Memphis two weeks later? I'll go with the team that I think is the better team. I just hope that the best of both teams show up for this game.

Happy New Years Everyone!
