Top 10 College Coaching Staffs

Since the sad passing of Don Shula on Monday there's been a deserving flood of stories, notes, remembrances, anecdotes, etc. One that grabbed my attention was this tweet from long-time football writer Dan Daly.

More from The Don Shula Files: In the '80s @chicagotribune ranked Kentucky's 1959 coaching staff, featuring Shula, as the 5th-best of all time. 5 of these 6 guys became NFL head coaches. 2 won NFL titles as head coaches (Don & Collier) & all but North won rings as assistants.

Thankfully, Daly also tweeted/posted the Chicago Tribune's entire Top 10. Curiosity would've driven me to consume a lot of time chasing down that list.

10. Oklahoma 1952 (8-1-1)

Dee Andros
Pop Ivey
Bill Jennings

It's important to keep in mind that this ranking was done in the 1980s.

It's interesting that three of these great coaching staffs coached their teams to losing records. One was 0-9.

Whenever I see mention of great college coaching staffs I can't help but think of the coaches that World War II brought together at Iowa Pre-Flight.

Iowa Pre-Flight 1943 (9-1)
Head Coach: Don Faurot
Assistants
Bud Wilkinson
Jim Tatum

This gathering of coaching minds can be considered "ground zero" of college football's option offense. Wilkinson and Tatum would each take what they learned under Faurot and go on to win National Championships.
