Vikings Roster Revisited

The Minnesota Vikings are on their much needed bye this week. They have some players that aren't healthy that they need to have healthy for the final seven games of the season, and if all goes well, the playoffs. Week 10 is a good time for a bye and the bye is a good time to revisit the Vikings roster. In the past week a couple of skill position players have been added to the active roster. In advance of last week's game against the Detroit Lions receiver Chad Beebe was promoted from the practice squad. Vikings defensive backs were struggling to cover him in practice so the coaches decided it was time to pass those struggles on to opposing defensive backs. Beebe made an immediate contribution with a big fourth down in his NFL debut. In a somewhat surprising move, the Vikings claimed running back Ameer Abdullah off waivers from the Lions. The move was a surprise in that starter Dalvin Cook finally appears healthy, Latavius Murray had gotten the running game going in recent weeks, and undrafted rookies Mike Boone and Roc Thomas had provided decent depth. Running back didn't appear to be much of a team need. The team's decision-makers obviously think that Abdullah can add something to the backfield. He was an effective kick returner for the Lions so it's likely that his contributions will start there. During his best days with the Lions, Abdullah was an explosive, versatile back. He was a second round pick out of Nebraska in the 2015 NFL Draft. He was drafted to be the future of the Lions running game but his 5'9" 200 lb size didn't fit the the power running direction of the new coaching regime. His occasional fumbles didn't fit any regime. Despite the size and ball security issues, Abdullah is a very skilled back. He's quick and elusive and can be a high quality situational player for the Vikings. He doesn't have to be the focal point of the offense. Perhaps he can excel as a supplemental offensive option. The addition of Abdullah is a low risk, high reward move. The additions of Beebe and Abdullah give the Vikings six receivers and five running backs. 11 receivers and backs feels like a high number for a Mike Zimmer team. But every year and every team is different. This Vikings team just has more of the little fellas.

Anyway, here's the current Minnesota Vikings. Until it's changed again.
