A few roster nuggets:

Offense: 25
Defense: 25
Special Teams: 3

Nine rookies made the roster. 6 of the 8 players that the Vikings selected in 2018 NFL Draft :

Mike Hughes, CB
Brian O'Neill, OT
Jalyn Holmes, DT
Tyler Conklin, TE
Daniel Carlson, K
Devante Downs, LB

Seventh round defensive end Ade Aruna tore an ACL in a preseason game and is on injured reserve. Sixth round guard Colby Gossett was signed to the practice squad.

Three undrafted rookies made the roster:

Mike Boone, RB
Roc Thomas, RB
Holton Hill, CB

Receiver Brandon Zylstra is an NFL rookie but he played two years in the CFL prior to the Vikings signing him in the offseason.

So the Vikings head into the 2018 season with 10 NFL rookies.

Some roster surprises:
The biggest surprise was seeing defensive end Brian Robison among the list of released players. I miss him already. His leadership and all-time personality can not be replaced.

It was assumed by many the Robison was released to make room for fast improving defensive lineman Ifeadi Odenigbo. Instead, nose tackle Dave Parry was kept. That was probably a wise move as the really had no other true nose tackle to back up Linval Joseph.

Keeping four running backs. Five if you count fullback C.J. Ham.

Keeping Devante Downs over Antwoine Williams or Reshard Cliett surprised a lot of people. It shouldn't surprise anyone that watched him play at Cal.

Keeping 11 defensive backs might be a surprise but seeing George Iloka released by the Cincinnati Bengals was a bigger surprise. That could be a huge addition and it's great that it didn't result in the loss of, say, Jayron Kearse.

The Vikings made one roster tweak post-cut down. They got themselves a new punter. Matt Wile is that new punter. He was claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers. 2017 punter Ryan Quigley was released. Seeing as Quigley's punting was wildly inconsistent my biggest concern with the switch is the disruption of the kicking battery. Quigley was the holder on place kicks for a rookie kicker in Daniel Carlson. Hopefully the transition is a smooth one.

And that brings us to the Vikings practice squad. As soon as Saturday's released players clear waivers teams start the process of putting together their 10-member practice squad. It's usually made up mostly of players that were with the team all offseason and summer but didn't fit on the roster. At least that was the case for the nine of the 10 players that the Vikings signed to their practice squad.

Practice Squad
Colby Gossett, G
Chad Beebe, WR
Jeff Badet, WR
Reshard Cliett, LB
Curtis Cothran, DT
Storm Norton, OT
Garrett Dooley, LB
Cornelius Edison, C
Jack Tocho, S
Cole Hkutini, TE

Cole Hikutini is the only member of the practice squad that wasn't with the Vikings in training camp. He was released by the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday.

Losing second-year defensive end and Vikings practice squad hopeful, Ifeadi Odenigbo to the Cleveland Browns was painful.

Now it's time for the 2018 edition of the Minnesota Vikings to get ready for the season.
