Minnesota Vikings Add A Receiver

With defensive tackle James Lynch sadly done for the year with a torn ACL, the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday added a receiver to the roster.

N’Keal Harry was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots to be a receiving savior. I know that I’d seen enough of him in his three years at Arizona State. With his 6’4” size and decent speed, he was a problem. I thought that he’d continue be a problem in the NFL. As with many of their receiver draft picks, it never seemed to work with the Patriots. The best of his three years in New England was 2020. Harry had 33 catches for 309 yards and two touchdowns. That wasn’t good enough for a first round pick. The Patriots traded him to the Chicago Bears last year for a seventh-round pick. He began the year with an ankle injury and only played in seven games. He caught nine passes for 116 yards and a touchdown for Chicago. He became a free agent after the season and had remained unsigned until Sunday.

The Vikings have a promising receiver group. The top four feel fairly set with Justin Jefferson, K.J.. Osborn, Jordan Addison, and Jalen Nailor. It’s wide open for the remaining one or two positional roster spots. A problem has been injuries. Nailor and Trishton Jackson have missed several practices with leg injuries. No one seems to know how many more practices they will miss. While the Vikings have a promising receiver group one thing missing from that group is size. None of the top receivers on the team are taller than 6’1”. Cephus Johnson III is 6’5”. Garrett Maag is 6’4”. Both are long shots for the 53-man roster. Unless he decisively flips his career trajectory, Harry should also be considered a long shot for the roster. He does bring some size. He was great at Arizona State. Who knows? Maybe the talent that he showed in college, the talent that earned him selection in the first round, finally shows in Minnesota.
