Minnesota Vikings Practice Squad

The construction of the Minnesota Vikings practice squad continued yesterday. Like the 53-man roster, the practice squad is a very fluid thing. Most of the players were added on Wednesday after they had been released by the Vikings on Tuesday. After they brought back some of their own players, the Vikings started looking at the players released by other teams. Through Thursday, 15 of the 16 practice squad spots had been filled.

Minnesota Vikings Practice Squad

     David Blough, QB
85 Dan Chisena, WR
46 Myles Dorn, S
31 Tay Gowan, CB
68 Kyle Hinton, OG
  9 Trishton Jackson, WR
38 Bryant Koback, RB
47 William Kwenkeu, LB
34 Nick Muse, TE
35 Parry Nickerson, CB
95 Janarius Robinson, Edge
50 T.J. Smith, DL
60 Josh Sokol, C
87 Travis Toivonen, WR
93 Jaylen Twyman, DL

All but David Blough, Tay Gowan, and Travis Toivonen were with the Vikings through the offseason and training camp. Simply for the position he plays, Blough stands out from the other 14 members of the Vikings practice squad. With only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster an emergency quarterback was needed. After releasing quarterbacks Kellen Mond and Sean Mannion on Tuesday, it’s easy to assume that the Vikings hoped to bring back one of them. They didn’t get that chance. Mond was claimed by the Cleveland Browns. Mannion decided to make a change and chose to join the practice squad of the Seattle Seahawks. So the Vikings turned to Blough. After three years as the backup quarterback for the Detroit Lions, he gets a shot as a deep backup in Minnesota. Surprisingly, with five career starts, Blough has more starting experience than Mond and Mannion combined. Gowan was originally a 2021 sixth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals. He was sent to the Philadelphia Eagles as part of the Cardinals in-season trade for tight end Zach Ertz. Gowan spent the remainder of the 2021 season in Philadelphia. The Eagles released Gowan on Tuesday. Toivonen returns to Minnesota. He’s a native of Red Wing, MN and played at North Dakota. He’s spent time with the Seattle Seahawks and New York Giants. At 6’4” and 210 lbs, Toivonen has intriguing size for a team without a receiver taller than 6’2” on the active roster.

The Vikings practice squad is sitting at 15 players. There’s room for one more. Who will that player be?
