Fifth-year Options

Monday was the deadline for teams to exercise the fifth-year options on players selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Making fifth-year decisions after only three years has always felt early. I guess that management wanted to put the pressure of a contract year on players that have yet to play to their first-round status. Nineteen of the 32 players selected in the first round had their fifth-year options exercised. Those players have fully guaranteed salaries for the 2023 season.

A list of the option decisions and the contract numbers that went with that decision:

Garrett Bradbury has a contract year to play to his first-round status. The Vikings have used a lot of recent high-end draft picks to build their offensive line. The pick used to secure Bradbury was the highest of those picks. His mobility and athleticism is his strength. He can do some things that few centers in the league can do. He’s also routinely tossed about by large defensive linemen. There are a lot of large defensive linemen across the league. The Vikings and Bradbury have a single season to devise schemes and techniques that emphasize his strengths and put him in positions to succeed. The Vikings are getting close to something good with their offensive line. They need Bradbury to catch up with the rest of those top draft picks.

This was supposed to be franchise-changing draft for the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants. Each team had three first-round picks. Based on their fifth-year option decisions, the changes didn’t take. The Raiders declined all three options. I wouldn’t call the selections of Josh Jacobs and Jonathan Abram failures. Perhaps it was simply a public way of pointing that blame finger at the decisions of Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock. Personally, these picks felt more like Gruden picks. The Giants declined two of the three options. Dexter Lawrence has been a success. DeAndre Baker absolutely hasn’t. Quarterback Daniel Jones still has a chance. His last chance with the Giants.

It’s strange to review this draft and see a first round with only two receivers. Recent drafts have been filled with first-round receivers.

RIP Dwayne Haskins.
