Minnesota Vikings 89-man Roster

The Minnesota Vikings have edged closer to the offseason roster limit of 90 players. The most recent additions came when they were awarded center Cohl Cabral off waivers from the Houston Texans last week and signed free agent cornerbacks Tye Smith and Bashaud Breeland this week. Cabral was originally signed by the Los Angeles Rams after he went undrafted out of Arizona State in the 2020 NFL Draft. He started last season on the Rams practice squad and finished the season on the Texans practice squad. He signed a futures contract with the Texans after the season. Now he’s on the 89-man roster of the Minnesota Vikings. The Seattle Seahawks selected Smith out of Towson in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He played in four games as a rookie, no starts. He spent the 2016 season on the Washington Football Team’s practice squad. He was with the Tennessee Titans from 2017-20. He appeared in 16 games with seven starts. The addition of Breeland is the most eye-catching of the recent additions. A seven-year veteran, he’s started 88 of the 94 games in which he’s appeared. He was a fourth-round pick out of Clemson by the Washington Football Team in the 2014 NFL Draft. He was an immediate starter and has been a consistent starter even since. He first caught my eye as an aggressive, impressive corner during his four years with Washington. His last two years have been as a dependable starter for the Kansas City Chiefs. Those two years put him in a career’s worth of big games. In Patrick Peterson, Mackensie Alexander, and now Breeland, the Vikings have added a strong veteran presence to what was an achingly young cornerback group. With those additions and the youngsters that they join, the competition for cornerback roster spots might be the most interesting of the summer.

The addition of Cabral, Smith, and Breeland bring the Minnesota Vikings roster to 89 players.

Tye Smith joins Patrick Peterson and Cameron Smith as the only Vikings players to take advantage of the league’s new, more open rules on uniform numbers. Tye Smith (#5) and Peterson (#7) are going with the single-digit look. Cameron Smith will wear #32 as a linebacker.

Speaking of numbers, I’ve “assigned” Breeland #21. Partly because it’s available. Mostly because it’s the number that he wore in Kansas City. #21 is available because Mike Hughes was wearing it and he was traded to the Chiefs earlier this offseason. It turned into something of a cornerback-swap between the two teams.
