When I see the list of Hall of Famers scheduled to attend the festivities in Canton I look first for Alan Page and Bud Grant. Unfortunately, they’re rarely on the list. It’d probably take the induction of Jim Marshall to get both to Canton.
As joyous as these gatherings in Canton are I can’t help but be saddened by the ever-shrinking number of football greats from the 1950s. Unless Charlie Trippi is in attendance, forget about the 1940s. Of the above greats, Lenny Moore is the lone representative of the 1950s. Dick LeBeau’s rookie year was 1959 but he’s a 1960s player in my mind. Despite the Minnesota Vikings not being a thought in the decade, the 1950s is one of my favorites. Great, fun teams like the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams, Detroit Lions, New York Giants, and Baltimore Colts. The San Francisco 49ers won no titles but were always fun. I love that decade of the NFL. The world was a better place when the Hall of Fame stage was peppered with the greats that made the 1950s so fun.
Now, nearly all of the living Pro Football Hall of Famers played during my lifetime. As John Madden said, all of the greats come alive in the Hall.
