NFL Coaching Tracker

Yesterday was a big day in this year’s head coach hiring cycle. A big-name, Super Bowl-winning head coach returned to the profession he apparently missed. A young, fast-rising assistant coach received his first head coaching shot with the team for which he once played. The Denver Broncos sent a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick to the New Orleans Saints for the negotiating rights to Sean Payton. The Broncos will also receive a 2024 third-round pick from the Saints as part of the deal. Payton will receive a ridiculous salary from the new Broncos owners. This was the fourth time since 1997 that a head coach was traded in a deal that included a first-round pick.

1997: Bill Parcells from New England Patriots to New York Jets
2000: Bill Belichick from New York Jets to New England Patriots
2002: Jon Gruden from Oakland Raiders to Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2023: Sean Payton from New Orleans Saints to Denver Broncos

Two of those deals ended up bringing a Super Bowl to the team getting a new head coach. The Broncos are clearly hoping that Payton does what Gruden and especially Belichick did.

The Houston Texans didn’t have to send draft picks to get their new head coach. They simply brought back one of their former players. The Texans hired San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans. He was a linebacker and team leader of the Texans from 2006-11.

Starting with the most important job out there, here’s a look at the coaching tracker of this year’s hiring cycle.
