The Minnesota Vikings are the only team to hire a head coach from one of the Super Bowl teams. Kevin O’Connell isn’t officially the head coach of the Vikings until his work with the Los Angeles is complete. Having a Super Bowl run has long been considered a deterrent for an assistant coach looking to be a head coach. I’m glad that the Vikings went with their first choice for the job even though they have to wait for him.

Press conferences in Miami will be fun. At the start of this head coach cycle, I knew of Mike McDaniel by name. I knew that he was an architect of the San Francisco 49ers great run game. I didn’t really know much else about him. Over the past couple weeks, I’ve watched some highlights of his press conferences. He’s a character. A fun character.

The Houston Texans are a mess. For the second offseason, it feels like their head coach preference is Josh McCown. This ridiculous franchise is apparently reluctant to hire a former quarterback only a year removed from his playing career with zero coaching experience. Instead of hiring McCown, they play games with a black head coach. As if they didn’t already have enough obstacles to a head coach job. The Texans gave David Culley a single season despite coaching beyond the capabilities of his team. Will Lovie Smith get more than a year? I can’t help but think that he’s just holding the job until Cal McNair works up the strength to hire McCown. Smith has been in the building all offseason. For some reason, he’s finally considered for the job on Sunday and is interviewed and hired on Monday. I feel bad for any coach that takes the Texans job.

Dennis Allen has done a terrific job with the Saints defense. He deserved an opportunity to be the team’s head coach. I was just hoping that the Saints would give Byron Leftwich or Eric Bieniemy an opportunity. I wish that any team, any team but the Texans, had given them an opportunity.
