The Minnesota Vikings reduced their roster to 53 players on Tuesday. An NFL roster is a very fluid thing. There’s been a few changes since the roster was initially set on Tuesday. After releasing punter Britton Colquitt and signing former Pittsburgh Steelers punter Jordan Berry yesterday, it feels like Vikings 53-man roster is settled enough for an initial posting.
Some roster curiosities:
-23:27 Offense:Defense split. I can’t recall ever seeing such roster disparity.
-7 linebackers. I doubt that number lasts long.
-2 running backs. I’m guessing that Ameer Abdullah will be promoted on game day.
-Half of the tight ends have been added since Tuesday.
- Quarterback Sean Mannion on practice squad.
COVID expanded the practice squad and loosened some of it’s restrictions. That’s resulted in a more experienced practice squad than we’ve ever seen. It’s a little odd to see veterans like Ameer Abdullah, Dakota Dozier, and Sean Mannion on it. Of the 16 players on the practice squad, 14 went through training camp with the Vikings. Only quarterback Sean Mannion and receiver Trishton Jackson are new to the team. And Mannion isn’t really new. He backed up Kirk Cousins the past two seasons. Rumor has it that he was a terrific resource in the quarterback room, at practices, and on the game day sideline. It sounds like he was an extra coach to the rest of the quarterbacks, and Cousins in particular. That’s great. I’m all for anything that helps the team. Maybe he can get QB1 vaccinated. No one else has been able to do it. Neither has real science, common sense, an overall concern for society, and a desire to end this damn pandemic. I still hope that it’s Kellen Mond that takes the field if something takes Cousins off the field.
