The NFL Compensatory Picks Are Out

Yesterday, the NFL handed out 32 Compensatory Picks for the 2019 NFL Draft. These picks are awarded to teams that basically lost more or better free agents than they signed the year before. The formula that the league uses to determine these picks has never been released but many outlets have figured it out to such an extent that they can predict the picks with great accuracy. After yesterday's announcement, there's no need to rely on predictions or projections. We know who received what. 15 teams received the 32 picks. Here's the full list of those Compensatory Picks.

Considering their activity last offseason, it's remarkable that the Los Angeles Rams received two third round picks and three picks overall. They added a lot of big name talent but but they added that talent through trades (Brandin Cooks, Aqib Talib, Marcus Peters) or street free agents (Ndamukong Suh). They dodged the Compensatory Draft formula by not signing unrestricted free agents. They only lost unrestricted free agents (Sammy Watkins and Trumaine Johnson in particular) thus gaining two third round picks this year.

When the Arizona Cardinals released quarterback Sam Bradford before Week 10 last season it wasn't a great deal for Bradford. It wasn't such a great deal for the Minnesota Vikings either. Due to the large salary that the Cardinals had given Bradford the Vikings were in line to receive a third round Compensatory Pick. That pick faded away when the quarterback was released.
