Yesterday was National Signing Day for the high school football players moving on to college football. It wasn't the event that it's been in the past due to this year's introduction of an early signing day in mid-December. Cal did add three players yesterday.

Judging by the 21-member 2018 class, Cal coaches were focused on retooling/reloading/restocking the offensive line and linebacker positions. The five linebackers and five offensive linemen make up nearly half the class. With the switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 last year under head coach Justin Wilcox and defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter Cal needed to add linebackers. And they needed linebackers with varied talents. Pass rushers, run-stuffers, and players that could cover. The offensive line struggled with consistency and injuries the past few years. They needed to add talent and they needed depth. They got both with this class. They also got bigger.

Welcome to Berkeley to the 21 new student-athletes. A few of them are already there.
